Acquiring U.S. Citizenship: Your Path to the American Dream

Becoming a U.S. citizen is a life-changing milestone that grants individuals full rights, benefits, and protections under U.S. law. There are three primary paths to U.S. citizenship:

1. Birthright Citizenship

Under the 14th Amendment, anyone born on U.S. soil automatically becomes a U.S. citizen. This includes:

• Individuals born in the 50 states or U.S. territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, etc.)
• Children born abroad to at least one U.S. citizen parent (under certain conditions)

2. Citizenship Through Parents

• Children born abroad may automatically acquire derivative citizenship if their U.S. citizen parent(s) meet residency and other legal requirements.

3. Naturalization (Most Common Path for Immigrants)

• Naturalization is the process by which lawful permanent residents (green card holders) become U.S. citizens after meeting specific requirements.

To apply for naturalization, you must:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Have held a green card for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen)
• Have continuous residence and physical presence in the U.S.
• Be able to read, write, and speak basic English
• Pass a U.S. civics and history test
• Demonstrate good moral character (no serious criminal offenses)

1. Submit Form N-400 – File the Application for Naturalization with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
2. Biometrics Appointment – Attend a fingerprinting session for background checks.
   
3.  USCIS Interview & Citizenship Test – Answer questions about your application and take the English and civics test.
4. Oath of Allegiance Ceremony – Once approved, take the Oath of Allegiance to officially become a U.S. citizen!
